This Season Matters: Why Game Day Photography Is About More Than the Game

The final score matters in the moment.

But years from now, it probably won’t be the thing you remember most.

You’ll remember the way they looked walking onto the field. The pre-game nerves. The teammates who became some of their closest friends. The coach talking to them on the sideline. The celebration after a huge play. The disappointment after a tough loss.

You’ll remember the season.

That’s why I believe Game Day photography is about so much more than getting a great action shot.

The Moments Between the Plays

Of course, I’m watching for the big moments.

The goal. The save. The tackle. The try. The hit. The celebration.

But I’m also watching everything happening around them.

The athlete taking a second to focus before the game. Teammates laughing on the bench. The look between a player and their coach. Mud-covered jerseys. Taped wrists. Hands in the huddle. The exhaustion at the end of a hard-fought game.

Those are the images that tell the whole story.

Because your athlete’s season isn’t just a collection of highlights. It’s practices, friendships, setbacks, wins, losses and hundreds of little moments that eventually become memories.

I Photograph Sports Differently Because I Was an Athlete

I grew up as a competitive athlete, and I think that experience changes the way I photograph sports.

I understand the anticipation before the play develops. I’m watching the athlete even when the ball or puck isn’t there yet. I’m looking for the reaction after the play, the interaction with teammates and the moments that happen when everyone else is watching the scoreboard.

I know how much of your life can become wrapped up in a sport.

And I also know how quickly that chapter ends.

One season becomes the next. Teams change. Coaches change. Kids grow up.

Eventually, there is a last game.

Most of the time, you don’t realize how significant those ordinary game days were until they’re already behind you.

Your Phone Is Full. But Are You in the Moment?

Parents are incredible documentarians.

You’re taking photos from the stands. Recording video. Trying to catch the big play while also actually watching your kid play.

But sometimes it’s nice to put the phone down.

Watch the game.

Cheer.

Be there.

Let someone else worry about capturing it.

Years from now, it’s a reminder of who they were, who stood beside them and how much that season meant.

This season matters. Document it.
