urban grad session in steveston village

Grad photos do not always have to mean formal dresses and perfectly posed portraits. Sometimes the most meaningful photos come from simply showing up as yourself.

This recent grad session took place in Steveston Village, one of my favorite locations for portraits in Richmond. The mix of historic buildings, quiet streets, and waterfront views creates so many beautiful backdrops in a small walkable area.

For this session, she chose something that felt completely natural to her. A cozy sweater and a pair of jeans. Comfortable, relaxed, and perfect for an urban setting like Steveston.

And honestly, it worked beautifully.

Using Light in Different Ways

One of the things I loved most about this session was how the light kept changing as we moved through the village.

We used soft reflected light from storefront windows, open light in the middle of the streets, and warmer evening light closer to the waterfront. Every corner gave us something different to work with.

Light shapes the feeling of an image. Sometimes it is soft and flattering. Sometimes it creates contrast and mood. Sometimes it glows gently behind you and gives that warm halo effect.

Part of my job during a session is constantly watching how the light moves so I can place you in the best spot without it ever feeling complicated or technical.

Grad Photos Don’t Have to Be Dressy

A lot of grads think their photos need to be formal, but that is not always the case.

You can absolutely wear a dress or something more polished. But you can also show up in jeans and your favorite sweater, something that actually feels like you.

Grad photos should capture who you are in this moment. Your personality. Your style. Your energy before life moves on to the next chapter.

And if the idea of posing feels awkward, don’t worry about that part. I guide you with simple prompts and movement so nothing feels stiff or forced. You just get to relax and be yourself.

Vancouver Grad Photo Locations

Although this session was photographed in Steveston Village, this same casual, urban style works beautifully across Vancouver.

Locations like Coal Harbour, Gastown, and other city spaces offer incredible light, textures, and backdrops for grads who want something a little different from the typical park setting.

Spring Grad Season is Almost Here

Spring is one of the best times of year for Vancouver grad photography. The light is softer, the days are longer, and the city begins to bloom again.

And of course, cherry blossom season is coming soon, which makes for an incredible backdrop for grad portraits. The blossoms only last for a short window, so those sessions always fill quickly.
