how to prepare your child for a fine art mini session

A fine art mini session is a short and meaningful opportunity to capture your child just as they are. These 10-minute sessions are designed to be simple, relaxed, and natural. No posing. No forced smiles. Just your child in their true essence.

Because of the limited time, preparation is key—but not in the traditional sense of “say cheese” and sit still. The goal is not perfection. It’s authenticity. Here's how to help your child get the most from a mini session and ensure the images reflect their genuine spirit.

1. Talk About the Experience, Not the Outcome
Before the session, let your child know they’ll be spending a few minutes having photos taken, but emphasize that there are no rules. There’s no need to smile unless they feel like it. Tell them they can just be themselves—quiet, silly, curious, serious—whatever feels right. The more comfortable they feel, the more natural the portraits will be.

2. Choose Simple, Comfortable Clothing
Neutral tones and soft textures work beautifully in fine art images. Avoid logos, neon colors, or anything that distracts from your child’s face and expression. Most importantly, make sure they feel good in what they’re wearing. If a sweater itches or shoes feel tight, it can affect their mood in those first few minutes.

3. Arrive Calm and Unhurried
A rushed arrival can throw off the entire session. Plan to arrive early so you have a few minutes to breathe and settle in before it begins. If your child feels calm and unpressured, they’re more likely to open up naturally.

4. Don’t Coach or Direct
It can be tempting to encourage your child to “smile nicely” or “look at the camera.” But letting go of those expectations allows space for real moments to happen. Trust the process. I’ll gently guide them if needed, but most children will find their rhythm quickly when given the space.

5. Let It Be What It Is
Sometimes the quietest moments tell the loudest stories. A thoughtful gaze, a playful expression, or even a fleeting look of wonder—these are the moments we’re looking for. There’s no need to perform. Just be present with your child and let them lead the way.

These sessions are offered only a few times a year and they fill up quickly.
