why I’ll never tell your child to smile (and what I do instead)

When I was a child, I didn’t enjoy being photographed. I remember the forced smiles, the stiff poses, and the pressure to "look happy." It felt unnatural, and the photos always showed it. Now, as a family photographer in Richmond, BC, I carry those memories into my work—because I believe photography should capture truth, not performance.

One thing I never do during a session is tell your child to smile. That simple direction often creates a moment of awkwardness, a break in authenticity. You know the look: tight-lipped, uncertain, eyes not quite aligned with joy. That’s not the kind of memory I want to create for your family.

My approach is different. I focus on lifestyle photography, which means capturing moments that are real, unscripted, and full of personality. Whether we're walking through Garry Point Park or playing along the docks in Steveston, I guide your family through gentle, natural prompts that encourage connection and fun. Before long, your child is laughing, exploring, and completely themselves. And that's when the magic happens—smiles that aren't prompted, but felt.

By the end of our session, I don’t need to ask for a smile. It’s already there, in the joy of being seen and celebrated just as they are.

As August winds down and the back-to-school routine begins, it's the perfect time to pause and preserve these moments. The golden light of late summer in Richmond creates a beautiful canvas for authentic family portraits. Your child is growing, changing, becoming—this moment matters.

Looking ahead, my Fine Art Mini Sessions return in September. These sessions are a unique blend of artistic direction and natural headshots for your child, held in a Steveston location. They book quickly, so if you’re thinking about capturing something truly special this fall, now is the time to book your Fine Art Mini Session timeslot.

If you're looking for a Richmond, BC family photographer who values authenticity, connection, and artistry, I’d love to hear from you. Let’s create images that feel like your family—real, joyful, and unforgettable.
